HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA PROGRAMS

 

Enfield Adult and Continuing Education offers two high school diploma programs

to choose from: the Adult High School Credit Diploma Program (CDP) offers a variety

of courses as well as on-line courses offered through the Connecticut Distance

Learning Consortium (CTDLC) or the General Education Development Program (GED).

 

To enroll in either diploma program, pursuant to CGS – 10-69, applicants must be at

least 16 years old and officially withdrawn from day school.

 

 

 

ADULT BASIC EDUCATION (ABE)

GENERAL EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT

DIPLOMA PROGRAM (GED)

 

Adult Basic Education classes are designed for the student who needs additional skills

prior to entrance into the GED preparatory classes. Students work individually with the

classroom teacher in upgrading basic reading, writing and/or math skills. Teachers in

this program, the GED Preparation, and credit diploma program work closely together,

with frequent movement of students between groups. Computer assisted instruction is

available.

CITIZENSHIP
These classes will prepare students for the test given to individuals desiring to
become American citizens. This course covers the immigration process, U.S. Government, U.S. History and current events.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
English as a Second Language classes are offered at three levels: Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced.  Emphasis on conversation skills and listening comprehension; written composition and reading are included. Participants are
given a placement survey to determine course level. For more information and

ENFIELD GENERAL EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT DIPLOMA PROGRAM (GED)
General Education Development course prepares students in the 5 exam subjects
of Reading, Writing, Social Studies, Science and Mathematics. Students will
acquire a general knowledge of the 5 subject areas while developing test-taking
skills. The GED test is given in Enfield. A practice test is offered.

Take the preparation program for the social studies GED test. Students familiarize
themselves with
questions and answers that will assist them in taking the GED test.


GED ENGLISH/LITERATURE/WRITING

Review reading, grammar, and essay writing skills necessary to pass the GED test.
The writing
process is emphasized. Testing techniques will be discussed and questions
will be answered.


GED SCIENCE

Preparation for the GED consists of review of each week's homework assignments and a presentation on science-related topics.

We are currently enrolling students in the online course.  Your first step in the process is to complete the CCS Form 50 tests in Reading and Math, as well as take the GED Practice Tests.  This testing is available to you at::

    Tuesdays, 12p.m. to 3p.m.

Once you have completed the initial testing, you may be eligible to enroll in the following course.  This course is not teacher-led, but is still accessible online for you to work at your own pace to prepare for taking the GED.

Adult High School Diploma Program Requirements:

A minimum of 2 credits must be earned in the Adult Education Program.

4 in English

3 in Math

3 in Social Studies (U.S. History/Civics required)

2 in Science

1 in Vocational Education/Arts

7 in Electives

20 total credits to graduate


Ways to earn credits for your
adult high school diploma:

• transfer credits from any accredited school

• earn up to 5 credits for documented experience in the military, community, home or work

• take required and elective courses

• competency based curriculum packets

• independent study projects

 

 

2. GED Diploma

What is the GED? The General Educational Development test program is a method of

obtaining a high school equivalency diploma for Connecticut adults. To prepare for the
test, you
may enter the program at age 16. 

To take the test:

A. Persons 17 & 18 years of age may register if they have been officially withdrawn from

school for 6 months or their ninth grade class has graduated. Proof of age and an

official letter of withdrawal are required.

B. Social Security Number - Photo I.D.

C. If 21 or over, a fee of $13 is required

D. Prior to Registration:

     A. Take Assessment Tests

     B. Take Practice Tests

     C. Take Appropriate Classes

E. Registration:

     Tuesday 12:00 to 3:00 p.m., year round at CT Works, 620 Enfield Street and

     Wednesday 6:30 p.m., at Fermi High School, Room D216

F. Notification from the State of CT will be sent confirming test dates.

G. The CT Department of Education has instituted a 4 month waiting period before

retakes are possible.

COLLEGE CAREER PATHWAYS/COLLEGE CONNECTIONS


COLLEGE CAREER PATHWAYS/COLLEGE CONNECTIONS programs link classes in the credit

diploma program with programs at Asnuntuck Community College (ACC). The program permits
“Juniors and
Seniors” to get a head start on a two-year Associate Degree, or Certificate, in selected
technical fields. Depending
on the desired program, students may earn up to 16 semester hours of college
credit at no cost. 
ACC requires that students apply and be selected for these programs. A selection board of counselors, teachers
and administrators will review and recommend applicants for the program. Students
who enroll in the College
Connections program need to adhere to the following procedure:

1. Meet with a counselor and register for the appropriate College Connections program.

2. Register for the individual College Connections classes by course number.

3. Complete a College Connections application form.

4. Completed applications need to be submitted by the deadline.

5. A minimum grade of 80 is required.

 

On-Line Learning Classes Now Available for Adult High School Credit Diploma Students

Enfield Adult and Continuing Education is now offering a variety of courses targeted for

Adult High School Credit Diploma Students in collaboration with the Connecticut

Distance Learning Consortium (CTDLC) and other adult education programs around

the State. The following is a list of classes to be offered to students year round.


Orientation to On-Line Learning

* In this course, students gain familiarity with on-line instruction and learning, as well as on-line communication via blackboard tools, such as synchronous discussion boards, assignment tools,
and email. This
class is a prerequisite to taking any one of the academic classes being offered this
semester.
